Physics and microeconomics-based metrics for evaluating cloud computing elasticity

چکیده
Currently, many customers and broadband providers are using cloud resources, such as processing and storage, for their applications and services. With the increase of computational resources usage, elasticity has become quite attractive and a key feature in cloud computing paradigm. However, due to many technologies and strategies for providing cloud elasticity, its measurement is not obvious. Here we propose a set of metrics for measuring cloud computing elasticity based on Physics' concepts, such as strain and stress, and Microeconomics. Our experimental results show that the proposed elasticity metrics behave well towards the CPU usage. Besides, the metrics computation is simpler because it is straightforward, which speeds up the cloud elasticity evaluation. & 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A Framework for Evaluating Cloud Computing User’s Satisfaction in Information Technology Management
Cloud computing is a new discussion in enterprise IT. It has already become popular in terms of distributed technology in some companies. It enables managers to setup and run the intended businesses by avoiding excessive spending on computers, software and hiring expert staff, which proves to be cost effective. Cloud computing also helps users pay for the IT services without spending massive am...
متن کاملElasticity in Cloud Computing: What It Is, and What It Is Not
Originating from the field of physics and economics, the term elasticity is nowadays heavily used in the context of cloud computing. In this context, elasticity is commonly understood as the ability of a system to automatically provision and deprovision computing resources on demand as workloads change. However, elasticity still lacks a precise definition as well as representative metrics coupl...
متن کاملA risk model for cloud processes
Traditionally, risk assessment consists of evaluating the probability of "feared events", corresponding to known threats and attacks, as well as these events' severity, corresponding to their impact on one or more stakeholders. Assessing risks of cloud-based processes is particularly difficult due to lack of historical data on attacks, which has prevented frequency-based identification...
متن کاملOn defining metrics for elasticity of cloud databases
In the database area, elasticity of cloud computing has required data systems to increase and decrease their resources on demand. However, traditional benchmark tools for data systems are not sufficient to analyze some specificities of these systems in a cloud. New metrics for elasticity are needed to provide an indicator both from consumer and provider perspective. In this work we present a se...
متن کاملSYBL+MELA: Specifying, Monitoring, and Controlling Elasticity of Cloud Services
One of the major challenges in cloud computing is to simplify the monitoring and control of elasticity. On the one hand, the user should be able to specify complex elasticity requirements in a simple way and to monitor and analyze elasticity behavior based on his/her requirements. On the other hand, supporting tools for controlling and monitoring elasticity must be able to capture and control c...
